Web2.0 and Healthcare : Avoiding Hype, Reaping Benefits

This is the title of a  presentation I am giving at the Healthcare Informatics Society of Ireland (HISI) on 22nd November. This is  the abstract I submitted :

A significant change has occurred over that last number of years in the way that most people use the Internet. This new internet coined Web 2.0 - a broad term used to describe the tools, technologies and motivation for the creation and consumption of online content  - continues to evolve.
The key concepts at the heart of this evolution have been tools and online services that enable people to create web based content, use web based services and interact with others through social networks.
What can this evolution offer to healthcare workers, practitioners and the patient? Can the technologies and concepts that have found favour with online consumers really benefit the health sector – or is the hype just too much?
What would be really great [...]

Web2.0 Presentation at HISI ‘07

Last week was a tough one. On thursday, I gave a presentation on Web2.0 and healthcare at the Healthcare Informatics Society of Ireland - the slides are on slideshare.
Earlier in the week, my uncle John Peyton finally passed away after a long illness at the age of 91; the funeral was on last wednesday.
John was born in 1916 - on the day that James Connolly was executed in the aftermath of the 1916 rising. He had a life long interest in technology and science; he bought his first PC only 5 years ago, never went anywhere without his mobile, and in the true nature of an engineer, always had a pen in his jacket lapel pocket. He had a lifelong interest in photography, and we would crack up when, after posing the nieces and nephews for a picture - he would  discover that the film had run out; this [...]

Review of articles covering Social Media and Web2.0

With a view to writing some more articles on the confluence of the web and healthcare - health 2.0, I’ve been reviewing previous articles written for the the Irish Medical Times and others on the subject.

These included

Blogging can be fun and informative (a blogging 101)

The broadband revolution is coming (sigh. 18 months later, and we still must engage in this debate. Will Government ever learn?)
Web evolves from all fours to walking (I failed my blogging 101 here on the incomprehensible title - you really do have to read it)
Web surfers are now web authors (user generated content, perhaps done unknowingly, and the "ratemyreplacewithwhateverservice".com phenomenen)
Why visit a website, when it can now come to you? (if you are not already using RSS, shame on you)

Podcasting may be good for health of consumers (apparently research is now suggesting that podcasts are becoming popular again; and not just because of traditional [...]

Stolen New York Laptop contained records of Irish Blood Transfusion Service Donors

Watching the evening news on TV - main story concerned the theft of a laptop holding over 167,000 patient donor records -  this happened in New York on 8th February. Sample data was being used on a new system upgrade that the Board is implementing.
In fairness to the Board, they seem to be doing everything right for a
situation like this. An Emergency telephone number has been setup for
concerned donors and recipients, and CEO Andew Kelly was shown
reassuring and explaining how the people affected will be contacted by
post before the end of the week.

In his words, all IBTS laptops have high levels of encryption, and this
was no exception. Speaking though as individual that tries to donate as often as I can  - I hope my name was not on the damn
laptop, encryption or no…

I’ve written in the past about the blood donor experience
and it has been a positive one. On [...]

Allscripts attempts at doing Viral Video

I don’t normally respond to the many requests from PR companies that come to me looking for coverage on this blog.
In my experience, they still have a lot to learn when engaging with bloggers in general - I agree with most of Damiens bullet points on pimping stuff.
So this Youtube short from AllScripts breaks the mold just a little bit. As someone who has professionally created this type of material - my comments relate to the medium rather than the message.

an intriguing opening, a flaccid middle part and a strong ending.
at just over 5 minutes it’s too long; between 2-3 minutes would have been much better, particularly with the strong messages at either end.
with reference to the middle bits that flagged, the imagery was just overused; yes, i did like that that zooming in on the screencast, but half the time spent would have been enough. likewise with the [...]

Does an old brain injury contribute to anger management problems?

I was in a serious head on car accident when I was about two years old, over 50 years ago. I don't know exactly how serious the brain injury was, but I am told I was till black and blue in the face months later. My head hit the radio and pushed it onto the dash at least a couple of inches. I have been struggling to control my angry reactions for all of my life. I've never physically hurt someone because I was angry, but I do react with verbal shouting and door slamming. Usually my anger subsides pretty quickly, especially if I take a break, but I still can't catch myself quick enough to prevent saying mean things or slamming something. My partner believes it's a matter of "just not doing what I do" but it's not that easy. Is she right? Or do after effects of the [...]

Religious wife regrets premarital sex; won’t sleep with husband

My wife and I have been married for over 6 years, we got married young, 20 & 22. But her past has always bothered me she had been with 9 guys before me. I keep reading about this subject and I know the past is the past and to just leave it in the past. But my problem is my wife told me she slept with guys to get the attention and the affection. As soon as the guy stop giving her those items she would find another new fling. Well after we got married I made the mistake of judging her harshly about her past because I had only been with 3 women before her and all of which I was serious about. I was always taught Sex is the most sacred part of marriage and that was when you were suppose to engage in it, Catholic School for [...]

MY 22 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER HAS HAD HER FIRST CHILD WITH A 19 YEAR OLD MALE THAT IS VERY CONTROLLING. I HAVE TAKEN HER TO MOST OF HER PRENATAL APPT UNTIL WE HAD A FAMILY DISAGREEMENT THAT INVOLVED HER SISTER TELLING HER THAT THIS 19 YEAR OLD MALE WAS SEEING OTHER GIRLS. OF COURSE THE 19 YEAR OLD MALE LIED HIS WAY OUT OF IT AND USED FORCE TO KEEP ME FROM SEEING MY DAUGHTER. AND NOW INORDER FOR ME TO SEE MY NEWBORN GRANDCHILD I AM SUPPOSED TO APOLOGIZE TO THE 19YEAR OLD MALE. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Sexual Anxiety

Hello Doc, I don't know who else to talk to about this so here it goes. My last boyfriend said I was bad at giving oral sex. He said this to be mean after we broke up over a year ago. But now I have a new boyfriend. My problem is that during the last year I have tried oral sex on him and I get so nervous and so much anxiety that I would have to stop. Now, I am to the point where just the thought of trying it again couses almost a panic attack and anger. The more I try to say no big deal just try again, the more I try to deal with the problem, the worse the anxiety gets. It seems like now the anxiety is way out of proportion to the problem. What started out as a bit of nervousness is now out [...]
