Q: What do you do for body lotion, most lotions have soybean products in them? Would it be just as hazardous to use those lotions as it is to eat soy?A: The safest moisturizer that I recommend is pure coconut oil. It is inexpensive and all natural - the important point that needs to be understood is that anything applied to the skin is absorbed by the body and processed through the organs.
Think twice before you apply any topical lotions or moisturizers to your skin as the substance will be absorbed by your body!

Q: I have heard of people using hypnosis to lose weight is there any research to support this and if so how do I know who to choose? A:
First of all, the research is pretty clear that medical hypnosis supports weight loss and more importantly supports long term weight loss. There are three studies that come to mind:
Study One: Bolocofsky, David N.; Spinler, Dwayne; Coulthard-Morris, Linda (1985). Effectiveness of hypnosis as an adjunct to behavioral weight management. Journal of Clinical Psychology, 41 (1), 35-41.
The first study, published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, divided 109 people into two groups for a 9 week study. The first group were treated with changes in diet and exercise habits (the only way to lose weight) without the addition of hypnosis. The second group was given the same diet and exercise treatment and was also given hypnosis for reinforcement.
After 9 weeks, [...]

Q: I have a question about scars. Unfortunately I have some hypertrophic scars. They appear purely due to their vascular nature. I have tried mederma, and have even had lasers used. Are there any natural products that help with scarring to reduce the color?A: See video response for complete response but the simple answer is that you can inject a local anesthetic like 1% procaine with a very small 27 or 30 gauge needle into the wound at weekly intervals to dramatically improve the wound over time. This is a common form of therapy called neural therapy in Germany.
Also, do not expose the scar to sunlight during the healing process, anywhere from 3-6 months from the time of injury. The sunlight may cause discoloration to the wound.

Q: I have been a runner for over 35 years now and I have always wondered what the effects of this may be on my knees and other joints. I have been noticing some stiffness and slight pain at times lately. Most of this is when I am cold and have not warmed up yet. I want to continue to run indefinately for the fantastic health benefits. I am presently taking 2000mg Glucosomine Sulfate a day for my knees. Any other suggestions?A: This is my 39th year of running and many of them in the 80s were highly competitive where I would race once or twice a month and frequently finish in the top ten. However, I haven’t really raced since the 80s and now only run to stay fit.
It is my belief that you glucosamine is unnecessary if you are structurally balanced and eating properly. Exercise will dynamically improve [...]

Q: Aloha Dr. Mercola,
I was wondering why you never mention vitamin E at all in regards to taking Krill Oil? Because of the mass amounts of omega-3 isn’t there concern about “lipid peroxidation” as there is with taking fish oil and cod liver oil? If so, and being that krill oil is one of your most popular products, this is a big oversight! Thank you for all your great work! AlohaA: The reason why vitamin E prevents oxidation is because it is an antioxidant. If you read the material on krill you will see it is loaded with other naturally occurring antioxidants which serve the same function.
